LMD Consulting starts every IT strategy engagement by looking at the business pillars of the organization and the "unconstrained" demands of the business. These demands may are unconstrained because some of these may not be feasible to implement because the organization may not enough funding, competency, or too risky to implement. LMD Consultants talk to business owners and understand this demand and categorize them by business functions.
Each of these initiatives by the business function is then passed through a filter to determine if its impact to the organization is transformational (new capability, new market), enhancement (operational improvements, new feature), or mandatory (infrastructure upgrade, regulatory compliance). The business then maps these initiatives to the business pillars and perform cost/benefit analysis. In many cases, the initiative may support more than one business pillar. A number of dependencies are also considered to cluster one or more initiatives to arrive at some economies of scale. So you may start with 80 initiatives and end up with 50 clustered ones. The result is a prioritized list of initiatives that IT agrees to perform and creates a Plan of Record. This mapping of business priorities with IT initiatives ensures that IT is relevant to the business. For measurement purposes, we establish controls to make sure that each of these initiatives achieves the benefits as outlined. These controls help map actual results with planned results for year-end analysis.
